N,N-Di-Methyl-Tryptamine (DMT) is a naturally occurring psychoactive alkaloid found in the cells of many plant and animal lifeforms. This alkaloid has also been detected as endogenous to the human brain, specifically the pineal gland, and newer research suggests it may be present at much higher levels than once believed. DMT has been called by many the most powerful psychedelic on the planet. It launches the user into intense visual hallucinations, tears apart any sense of time, and can surface deeply personal and powerful views about the nature of reality itself. It is also widely said that unknown beings, often described as benevolent, may appear during a DMT state. While DMT is the strongest psychedelic around, it is also one of the quickest acting.

Smoking or vaporizing DMT can produce an effect lasting about 15-20 minutes, though during that window you may lose track of time entirely. Our pens are blended by combining pure freebase dimethyltryptamine with propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG). About DMT

DMT, or N,N-Dimethyltryptamine, is a psychoactive chemical alkaloid that occurs naturally in both plants and animals, from very simple underwater organisms to large, complex, and intelligent land mammals. DMT is also the main active hallucinogenic compound in Ayahuasca, a psychotropic brew made from Banisteriopsis caapi and Psychotria viridis, along with other plants. Ayahuasca has been used for ritual purposes by indigenous people in the Amazon rainforest for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. People also take DMT in crystal or freebase form, smoking it in a pipe, bong, or more recently vaporizer cartridges. This method creates a powerful but short-lived hallucinogenic state, regarded by many as one of the most intense psychedelic states in existence.

DMT is also a key building block of many other psychedelic substances, including psilocybin (4-PO-HO-DMT), and it is structurally similar to both serotonin and melatonin. This similar structure is what lets it bind with 5-HT, or serotonin, receptors and produce physiological effects. Many people also confuse N,N-DMT with 5-MeO-DMT, or 5-Methoxy-N,N-Dimethyltryptamine. 5-MeO-DMT looks almost identical to N,N-DMT on both a macro and micro level, but the former has a few extra atoms attached. Although these two substances are nearly chemically identical, the effect can be very different. The DMT State

DMT becomes psychoactive when a dose of 0.2 mg/kg or higher is taken. When smoked or vaporized, DMT is extremely fast acting, with the peak of the effect arriving between 2 and 4 minutes after use, and fully fading within 15 to 20 minutes. When taken orally as an ayahuasca brew, the effects can take up to an hour to begin and may last as long as 12 hours. It is important to note that DMT on its own is not orally active, meaning you will not feel any effects if you eat or snort it, but when combined with Banisteriopsis caapi, which is an MAO inhibitor, it can become orally psychoactive. Mixing DMT into the liquids found in vape pens is a newer way of taking it with major benefits, mainly the ease of use.

Because the intensity of DMT depends on dose, vaping it can create hallucinations that are as intense as, or more intense than, more traditional methods, as long as the proper dosage is received within a short span of time. This sometimes takes several pulls or hits on a vaporizer. Low doses, 0.05 to 0.1 mg/kg, mainly affect physical and emotional states with few or no perceptual hallucinations.

For most people this is between 10-20mg of freebase DMT. High doses, 2.0 to 3.0 mg/kg, will produce rapid, often rotating or pulsating, kaleidoscopic images filled with rich and vividly colored abstract patterns. Auditory hallucinations are less common and usually are not a major part of the effect, though they have been reported. For most people this is between 30-40mg of freebase DMT. Out-of-body events, defined as the separation of awareness from the physical body, are also commonly reported with high doses of DMT, and this is often considered one of the hallmarks of a high-dose DMT state.

In his 2000 book, The Spirit Molecule, psychedelic researcher and psychologist Rick Strassman describes studies in which about half of the subjects reported encounters with intelligent beings, entities, aliens, guides, or helpers. Ethnobotanist and psychonaut Terrence McKenna called these beings machine elves. According to Strassman’s work, they may appear as clowns, reptiles, mantises, bees, spiders, cacti, and stick figures. They have also been described on several online forums as being made of geometric patterns.

DMT Pharmacology

Dimethyltryptamine is mainly a serotonin, or 5-HT, receptor agonist, with the strongest affinity for the 5-HT2A receptor in particular. It does affect many other receptor types, including dopamine and sigma receptors, but the effects of these interactions are not well understood. In a study that gave low, medium, or high doses to 12 volunteers, the psychedelic threshold for DMT was found to be 0.2 mg/kg.

At this level, most biological effects were measurably changed. Adrenocorticotropin hormone, beta-endorphin, prolactin, growth hormone, and cortisol were all raised. Pupil diameter, heart rate, and blood pressure all peaked within 2 minutes of administration, as did subjective effects. A later trial found that the body does not develop tolerance to DMT, meaning there is no need to take more to repeat the same effects, unlike other psychedelics such as LSD and psilocybin.
